Host a comprehensive church leadership training institute in your congregation

Many churches rely on a handful of staff members to carry the entire ministry load. As congregations grow, the demand for biblically literate small group leaders, teachers, and future elders quickly outpaces the supply of trained people. Sending volunteers away to an external seminary is rarely practical or affordable for a local congregation. Bible Training Centre for Pastors (BTCP) provides a ready-made church leadership curriculum that allows you to train your own people, in your own building, using your own qualified teachers.

Since 1990, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit ministry has helped congregations shift from a clergy-led model to a lay-led ministry approach. We equip local churches with the structure and materials needed to run a systematic bible certificate program, so pastors and church boards can multiply disciples within their specific local context.

The challenge of equipping local church leaders

Research shows a significant deficit in local ministry preparation across the United States. A 2026 Congregations and Leadership Study found that 51 percent of Southern Baptist churches report having no identified development plan for training current and future leaders. Relying on informal mentorship or one-off Sunday school classes leaves volunteers unprepared for the theological and practical demands of ministry.

Church boards often recognize the need for better training but struggle to find the time to write a custom curriculum from scratch. Pastors are already stretched thin preparing weekly sermons and managing pastoral care, and building a multi-year theological program from nothing takes hundreds of hours of planning and writing. Without a structured framework, leadership development usually stalls.

The solution is adopting a proven BTCP model that provides the syllabus, the student manuals, and the teacher guides, freeing your staff to focus on teaching and mentoring rather than curriculum development. You can read more about our history and how this model has successfully trained over 200,000 leaders globally.

What systematic church leadership training looks like

A true church bible institute moves beyond topical weekend seminars and disconnected small group studies. Systematic and comprehensive training means progressive courses that build on one another, starting with foundational Bible study methods and advancing through Old and New Testament surveys, doctrine, and personal spiritual life.

Most churches start with our BTCI track, five foundational courses (275 classroom hours) built for lay leaders, small group hosts, and anyone in the congregation ready for deeper biblical training. Once a church has a group through BTCI, some choose to continue into BTCL, an eight-course, 400-hour track for elders and deacons, or the full ten-course BTCP track for pastoral preparation. You can start with the tier that fits your congregation today and grow from there.

Every course requires active participation, reading, and practical application. Students must demonstrate their understanding of the biblical text and show how they will apply it to their specific ministry roles within your congregation.

How the internal local church institute works

You do not send your congregation away to an outside organization. Instead, you host the classes locally. BTCP operates exclusively through live, face-to-face instruction. We offer no online or correspondence courses because relational discipleship requires physical presence, life-on-life mentoring happens best when students and teachers interact in the same room.

Your church provides the instructor, typically a senior pastor, an associate pastor, or a staff member with a seminary degree or equivalent biblical education. Because the instructor knows the students personally, they can tailor the discussions to address the specific cultural and spiritual needs of your congregation.

BTCP supports your church by providing the course manuals and conducting a two-day Partnership Orientation and Teacher Training Workshop. This workshop equips your instructors to use the curriculum effectively and understand the philosophy behind non-formal theological education. Once your teachers complete the workshop, your church is ready to launch its BTCI institute.

Comparing external certificates to an internal church bible institute

Church boards often evaluate external programs like the Lewis Center Certificate Program or the Meta Leadership Academy when looking for training options. These external programs offer excellent instruction but come with high costs and require students to leave their local context.

External programs frequently charge thousands of dollars per student, some intensive leadership academies cost up to $2,000 per person for a single academic year. If a church wants to train ten elders, the financial burden becomes unsustainable. External programs also tend to focus heavily on general organizational leadership rather than deep biblical exegesis.

An internal church bible institute offers a highly cost-effective alternative. Students or the church budget cover the cost of the physical manuals, which run approximately $20 per course, no franchise fees, no ongoing subscription costs. You can view the specific costs for materials on our ordering page or add sample materials to your cart to review them with your board.

Structuring your lay leader training program

Implementing a structured program requires a clear timeline. The BTCI track requires 275 hours of classroom study, including a 60-hour Old Testament Survey and a 60-hour New Testament Survey. Most churches schedule one class per week or Saturday mornings, completing the five-course track in about eighteen months. This is the right starting point for most congregations.

If your church later wants to prepare elders or deacons specifically, the BTCL track adds three more courses (400 total hours) on teaching principles, church administration, and evangelism. Many churches don't move to this tier until their BTCI group has already graduated, there's no need to decide on that now.

The academic rigor of these courses provides real value. Graduates of the BTCI program can apply for advanced standing at Dallas Theological Seminary, saving your leaders time and tuition if they eventually pursue a formal Master of Arts degree. This means the leaders you train locally can carry that credit forward into a seminary degree later, if that's ever the right path for them.

Practical administration and strategic stewardship

Running a successful training center requires practical organizational management. Your church board will need to designate a program coordinator to handle logistics, track attendance, and manage book orders, so the instructor can focus entirely on teaching.

Funding the program is straightforward. Many churches allocate a portion of their adult education budget to cover the initial teacher training workshop and the first round of manuals. Other congregations ask students to purchase their own books to ensure they have a financial stake in their education. We provide free downloads and a comprehensive Program Summary Manual to help your board present the financial requirements to the congregation.

You can also supplement the classroom experience with our BBSA digital resources and free Bible study articles available on our blog, helping students prepare for class and review theological concepts at home.

Evaluating the success of your bible certificate program

Church boards need measurable ways to evaluate their training efforts. Success in a local institute is not just about weekly attendance, track course completion rates, the number of graduates who step into active ministry roles, and the retention of those leaders over a five-year period.

A successful program produces tangible results: an increase in qualified small group leaders, a deeper bench of candidates for elder and deacon boards, and a higher level of biblical literacy across your congregation's prayers and discussions.

You can read testimonials from other pastors who have successfully implemented this curriculum. They consistently report that training leaders internally creates a more unified church culture, everyone learns the same theological vocabulary and ministry philosophy.

Frequently asked questions about church leadership training

Many church boards have similar questions when evaluating our curriculum.

Pastors frequently ask who can attend these classes. Our BTCI track is open to all qualified church members, including women, divorced individuals, and lay leaders preparing for volunteer ministry. The goal is to equip anyone who desires a deeper understanding of Scripture and a more effective ministry.

Another common question involves the required teaching credentials. Instructors need formal theological education, typically a seminary degree, to ensure they can guide students through complex doctrinal questions. If your church does not have a seminary-trained pastor on staff, you can partner with a neighboring church or a retired pastor in your community to lead the instruction.

Churches also ask how to handle registration. You manage all student enrollment internally. We provide the materials, but you maintain complete control over who joins the cohort and how you structure the academic calendar.

Equipping your congregation requires a structured plan and the right materials. Relying on informal mentoring is no longer enough to prepare leaders for the complex challenges of modern ministry. By hosting an internal BTCI institute, you keep your best leaders in your congregation while providing them with seminary-level biblical instruction.
